Overview

The serial numbers on the back of your Kaypro came in multiple different versions over time. I attempt here to show the different styles and potential "skips" in the numbering system.

The current research leads me to believe that the earliest serial number was around #2,500. Marshall who worked for Kaypro commented:
"They did not begin with serial number one. It was a running joke on campus - one that was true - that serial numbering depended on who was running the line that day. It caused a lot of headaches in support and repair."
(Marshall Moseley, Facebook Posting, September 2025)

Small Grey Tag (6 digits) Version 1

Range seen 2561-21460

The first serial number tags that I have seen are the small grey tags with 6 digits.

Small Grey Tag (5 digits)

Range seen 22755-99300

The second serial number tags are similar to the first tags but they are limited to 5 digits.
The first one that I know of is 22755. That creates a gap of about 2000 from the previous tags.
They appear to end somewhere after 99300.

Small Grey Tag (6 digits) Version 2

Range seen about 100000-158324

Some might argue that this is not a new tag since it appears that these tags were required since they had reached 100,000.
I believe the first one would be 100000. (I cannot find a new 6 digit before 100000.)
They appear to end somewhere after 158324.

Large Grey Tag

Range seen 200494-215417

The first one that I know of is 200494. I suspect that there may be as many as 40K that are skipped and they may have restarted at 200000. They appear to end somewhere after 215417.

Large White Tag Type 1

Range seen 240019-274022

The first on that I know of is 240019. Again there may be a skip of as much as 25K maybe restarting at about 240000.

Large White Tag Type 2

Range seen 283822

These look a lot like the previous ones but the font used is taller in appearance.

Large White Tag Type 3

Range seen 398964-418199

These are the last tags used and they have a "dirty" appearance almost grey in coloring. Also note that the breakaway slits are close together on the bottom and top compared with the early tags.
