Kick Stand

Somewhere between Serial Numbers 34,000 and 40,000 Kaypro began preparing to add kick stands to their machines. By about 50,000 they were regularly installing the kick stands on the machines.

A few Pre 81-003 KII machines had factory kick stands (or at least were designed to use them). Most of the 81-003 KII machines would have a factory kick stand. All of the K2, K4, K10 and K1 machines had kick stands.

(I suspect that Kaypro changed to factory kick stands on the KII about the same time that they released the K4 and K10.)

Examples

Here are three examples of the feet/kick stand arrangement:

No kick stand
Note that the foot is towards
the front and outside
Transition to a kick stand
Note the there are two screw holes
and they are moved back and in
Kickstand
Uses the same holes as the transition

Note that the kick stand, Model Number and Serial Number are all part of the same piece of sheet metal so you can't swap parts and end up with a mixed machine.

Pre-81-003

You will see from the images below that the later Pre-81-003 KII machines also seemed to have at least an option to add a kick stand (#34644 and #56111).

#34126

#34571

#40448

#51174
No kick stand
Note this is what I call an out of sequence machine.
Even though the serial number is later
it looks like it was constructed with an older style case.
Not only does it have no kickstand it also
doesn't have the Kaypro above the NLS tag
next to the serial number.

In the 81-003 model there were a few early ones that did not have the holes for the factory kick stand. (#36960)

After Market Kick Stands

ICP Kick Stand

The one kick stand that looks like the factory kick stand if you don't look close is from ICP. Here is the advertisment for it and a picture of one on a machine. It is clear from the picture that it is very different from the factory kick stand. The ad is from Kaypro Users Group Newsletter Vol 2 No 1.

Optional Kick Stand 2

This is the most common one I see in listings. It usually connected without any modifications.

Optional Kick Stand 3

This Kick Stand requires new holes to be drilled into the case.

Kick Stand from another Machine?

This example shows what I believe to be a kick stand from a later Kaypro that has been added to this machine.
Note the extra holes in front of and to the outside of kickstand mounts.
