Kaypro 2X (81-014, 81-025, 81-033)

The Kaypro 2X was a replacement for the Kaypro 2 and 4. It was named after the Kaypro 2 due to it being a much better known name than the Kaypro 4. The X indicated that it was "extended" meaning the it had Double Sided - Double Density Drives instead of the Single Sided - Double Density of the previous Kaypro 2.

(81-014)

The initial 2X (81-014) was relabeled by adding an 'X' sticker next to the 2 on the case.

This is the same 'X' used for labeling the Kaypro 4X.

These machines used the "universal" mainboard. The Real Time Clock (RTC) and Modem do not appear to have been populated in this version.

(81-025)

The second version of the Kaypro 2X was mostly a case upgrade from what I can find. The Sticker is gone and now the machine has 2X printed directly on the case.

The front of the Machine also got a custom 2X added between the disk drives.

With this model number the case and keyboard were designed and colored just like the Kaypro 4 and 10.

(80-033)

The last revision of the Kaypro 2X is the (80-033). This model was upgraded with an internal modem and RTC standard.

Kaypro Corporation announces an upgraded version of the widely successful Kaypro 2 microcomputer. The New Kaypro 2X offers all of the same features as the Kaypro 2 but employs double-sided, double-density disk drives giving the computer twice the storage capacity. Retailing for $1595, the 2X costs just $300 more than the Kaypro 2. According to David Kay, VP of Marketing for Kaypro, "We feel that most users will be anxious to pay only an additional $300 for a computer offering twice the capabilty." Both the Kaypro 2 and the Kaypro 2X offer 64K of RAM, a built in 9" non-glare monitor, a detachable keyboard, and full portability in one small, rugged package. The software (M-Basic, C-Basic, S-Basic, CP/M, WordStar, Mailmerge, the Word, CalcStar, InfoStar, DataStar, and selected games) supplied with each machine is worth more than $3000 and is included free.

The Kaypro 2X is a combination of the Kaypro 2 and 4. It comes with two 392K drives, a real-time clock, and a 300-baud internal modem.

When the consolidated model line was being planned, Kaypro felt that the Kaypro 2 name was better recognized than Kaypro 4, so the Kaypro 2 designation was kept and applied to the Kaypro 4.

The software that comes with the 2X includes WordStar, The Word Plus, Microsoft BASIC-80, CBASIC, S-BASIC, InfoStar, CalcStar, Mite, MicroPlan, and the CP/M 2.2 operating system.

In addition to the standard Kaypro 2X, the Kaypro "Business Pak" consists of the Kaypro 2X plus a letter-quality printer from NEC. The Juki 6100 is no longer Kaypro's official letter-quality printer. It's been replaced by the NEC ELF.
