Kaypro offers a complete line of foreign language computers which are sold exclusively outside the USA to our international distributors. For domestic sales, Kaypro offers a variety of international kits to transform regular Kaypro computers into bilingual models. The only modification to the computer is the replacement of both the monitor and character EPROMs, and the use of a bilingual keyboard. This product is geared to educational, government, import/export, and minority-owned business markets.

Using an International Kit, the computer can switch back and forth between the foreign language and English with a touch of a key.

The International Kit operates with all printers that are normally used with Kaypro computers. Some of these printers include the Kaypro Letter-Quality Printer, Juki, Comrex, Epson, and Okidata. Please check the foreign language character set capability on other dot-matrix printers or the availability of foreign language printwheels before purchasing a printer.

Kits are available for the Kaypro 2/83, 2/84, 2X, 4/83, 4/84, and 10. Promotional material will be available soon.

  • The Kaypro modified with a International Kit will continue to run all standard English programs with no changes necessary.
  • Dealer should be able to install kit in about 15 minutes.
  • Kits are specific to Kaypro model and are not interchangable between models.
  • Foreign language Supercalc and DBASE II are not sold in the kit, though they are referenced in the foreign language Kaypro User's Kit Manual
  • Kit allows bilingual use between English and the foreign language, but not between the foreign languages; an entirely different kit is necessary.
  • Difference between the International Kit and a Foreign Kaypro are:
    • Kits do not have D-Base II and Supercalc
    • Foreign Kaypros are not sold in the U.S.
    • Kit is only for U.S. machines
    • Kaypro Europe can service International Kits
  • Foreign language Wordstar has translated help menus and a translated sign-on message.
  • Foreign language CP/M has a translated sign-on message and a translated masmenu.
  • With Eproms installed, the machine will only recognize the layout of the foreign keyboard.
  • Layout of foreign characters on keyboard is the standard layout that exists in each country.
  • The computer modified with the International Kit has two modes. Selectkey changes which character set is displayed on the monitor. Specific u.s. ASCII characters and the foreign language characters have the same internal codes and Selectkey toggles which image will be displayed on the screen. To print what you see on the screen depends entirely upon what printwheel is used or which dip switches are set. If an u.s. ASCII printwheel is used, then that U.S. ASCII character set will show up on paper.
  • The foreign language Wordstar is designed to accept foreign characters (from the keyboard or modem) and will display on the monitor most of the special and accented characters common to the particular language.
  • With regard to printers, the International Kit does not have any particular requirements. If a letter-quality printer is used make sure an appropriate print wheel is in use. Attachment to a printer which has the proper print wheel or dip switch setting will allow printing of the special and accented characters as well. Special installation instructions come with the kit.
  • Selectkey also allows the display of accented characters on monitor. To access the accent or diacritical mark on the bottom of the SK, press Selectkey and then press desired vowel. To access the mark on the top of the Selectkey, press SK while holding down shift key, and then press vowel to be accented. Accented characters will be displayed on the screen as preceded by 'H.
  • Selectkey is also used to access the blue characters on some of the keycaps. To get the third character, press SK and then keycap. To get the fourth character, press SK while holding shift key and then keycap.
  • While in foreign language Wordstar, Selectkey also allows access to U.S. ASCII characters on the foreign language keyboard that do not respond when pressed (beeps). Just press SK twice and then desired ASCII character. Press SK twice again to activate accented and special characters. The U.S. ASCII characters will work (not beep when pressed) when returned to CP/M or any U.S. version program.
  • A special installation program (SelectPrint) is provided on the foreign language CP/M diskette which reconfigures the output of the foreign language Wordstar to match the print wheel positions and character codes of the printer. Maintain "tele-type" style and don't expect fancy features such as super/sub The accented characters are most sensitive to proper installation. Accented characters will be proceeded by a 'H on screen (backspace).
  • English Wordstar
    • menus in English
    • accepts U.S. ASCII from keyboard, modem and displays
  • Foreign Language Wordstar:
    • menus translated
    • accepts foreign characters from keyboard, modem and displays
  • also accepts U.S. ASCII
