Kaypro 2020

Engineers in the research and development department at Kaypro Corp. have produced the first prototype for a new line of lap-top computers, and it is attracting the attention of potential buyers in the United States and Europe.

Joseph W. Marcello, vice president of sales for the local firm, said the first prototype minature computer was sent to the Federal Office Expo in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.

Unveiling the new model signals another upturn for the family owned and operated manufacturing firm, which has experienced a series of losses and personnel upheavals during the last three years. ...

Meanwhile, engineers at the firm are set to produce about 20 additional prototypes of the new model 2020 lap-top computer, which will be unveiled in the nation's capital this week.

Marcello said Kaypro already has received calls for the new model from customer bases in Europe, Oklahoma and Washington.

The model 2020 - an advanced version of Kaypro's 2000+ lap-top model - will be offered on a limited distribution basis for now, he added.

In July 1989, they [Kaypro] released an upgraded and lighter version of the Model 2020, which sports a 1.44Mb diskette drive, a 20Mb hard disk, 1Mb of RAM, and a 12MHz 80C286 microprocessor.

Cosmetically the 2000+ and 2020 are indentical; only the motherboards have been changed. In all other respects, such as display technology, built-in features and expansion options, both models are the same. ...

The Landmark CPU Speed Test indicated the 2020 ran at 10MHz. This means two wait states had been inserted in to the system's operation.
